Reinforcement Testing for the Envirolock Pipeline Reinforcement System

ASME PCC-2 Reinforcement Testing
Conducted by Qualitest Canada
Nisku, Alberta
An EPRS-equipped test spool with a 70% thru-wall defect easily passed both PCC-2 prescribed short-term and long-term survival tests. Whereas a non-reinforced pipe would have failed at ~1200 psig (~8.27 MPa), EPRS successfully prevented any leak or rupture from occurring. Despite the 2” x 3” defect, it showed minimal strain (<0.1%) even at a remarkable 3,550 psig (~24.48 MPa). Following the PCC-2 testing, the pressure was further increased to 5,060 psig (~34.89 MPa), and remarkably, EPRS still did not yield!

Impact Testing - Crush Test

Water Valley, Alberta
In the video to the left, an Envirolock-equipped pipe spool undergoes a crush test from the backhoe. Instead of yielding and damaging the pipe inside it, Envirolock is strong enough to lift the front portion of the backhoe off the ground! Even more amazing, this occurred even AFTER the pipe spool had been struck multiple times by the bucket while it was being unburied. One observer stated that Envirolock "was way tougher than I expected". Similarly, a LinkedIn commenter from the pipeline industry remarked "it sounds like a step change in coatings".

Impact Testing - Post-Test Analysis
In the video to the left, CEO Larry Young has disassembled one of the test spools from the impact testing to examine the pipe that Envirolock was protecting. Despite multiple third party impacts from the excavator which damaged Envirolock (by design), the pipe itself remained completely intact. In contrast, pipe spools protected by an FBE coating and a yellow jacket were both severely damaged after being struck in a comparable fashion.

"The sound was deafening, vibrations could be felt through the floor above the pit and when the dust settled, Envirolock was whole, undamaged."
In the video to the left, the pipe rupture occurs at approximately the 35 second mark. Instead of seeing an explosion however, you will see only a slight shift in the surrounding hosing and measurement sensors. Why? Because ECS completely contains the rupture! In the field, this amazing technological breakthrough would have eliminated any fatalities, injuries, evacuations, fire, or pollution that might have resulted from the rupture!

Other Envirolock Validation Partners & Efforts
- Pipeline Research Council International - In February 2023, TCI partnered with PRCI to conduct the first public demonstration of our technology. The system was installed on a single 10’ spool with a defect (3/8” hole). Envirolock was completely successful in capturing and holding the released material (water) at the 150 psi operating pressure. Approximately six months later, we received confirmation that the system continued to hold pressure; moreover, the system is compatible with inline inspection tools.
- C-FER Technologies frequently partners with TCI to verify the results of our own lab testing and to expand our testing capabilities.
- Hingeneering Consulting provides FEA work for Envirolock's designs, and this innovative research was featured at the Society of Petroleum Engineers International's ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference 2024 Technical Conference.
- University of Alberta - Dr. Mertiny and his team offer crucial robotic winding as well as engineering analysis support to TCI.
- Corpro Canada supported TCI's work to develop Envirolock in a way that is compatible with cathodic protection.
