Envirolock Applications

Envirolock Systems: Raising the Bar for Pipeline Integrity

TCI’s Envirolock secondary containment system with integrated leak detection is intended for use on pipelines of all service types and operational settings. It consists of a patented polyurea-based barrier installed on new or existing pipelines that is designed to block external damage, capture internal leaks, diffuse pressure, enhance leak detection speed, and enable continued flows pending pipeline repairs.

Pipeline Problem Without Envirolock With Envirolock
Internal Corrosion or Defect In high-pressure systems, eventual leak/rupture can result in wasted product, pollution, emergency response, and injuries/fatalities.

In low-pressure systems, inflow and infiltration results in infrastructure overbuilding and wasted resources. Gradual sediment build-up and/or root penetration can cause damaging back-ups, sinkhole development, soil/water contamination, and eventual pipeline loss.
Eventual leak/rupture is contained. Operator performs scheduled replacement. No impacts to the community or ecosystem
External Corrosion Envirolock protects the pipeline from the external threat; leaks, ruptures, and inflow/infiltration are prevented. No impacts to the community or ecosystem.

Envirolock Configuration

Envirolock is comprised of three main components: 1) the containment liner, 2) the annulus, and 3) the end caps/bulkheads.

envirolock

Containment Liner: Envirolock systems are principally comprised of two layers of polyurea. Polyurea is a VOC-free elastomeric polymer that is highly abrasion resistant, has exceptional tensile (elongation) strength, is resistant to chemical attack, remains flexible even at extreme temperatures, will expand up to 400% the original size before it fails, and has exceptional (maintenance-free) longevity. The inner polyurea layer is specified to meet the chemical resistance requirements for the service and to provide the required thermal expansion properties. The outer layer of polyurea is required to provide abrasion resistance, impact resistance and hardness required for the service. For higher pressure applications, a third layer (carbon fibre) is required. For severe chemical environments, a thin layer of a ceramic polymer can be added to the inside of the inner layer of the polyurea liner, specified to resist the chemicals that could come into contact with the containment liner in the event of a pipeline leak.

Annulus: Between the protected pipeline and the outer liner is an annulus space containing “Enviromesh” material (which can be manufactured from a specific recycled, single use plastic). Enviromesh is a porous (40 – 60% air) mat like material that is made of multiple, randomly oriented strands of PVC (or similar) material. Each layer is approximately 9 mm (3/8”) thick and is applied by winding the Enviromesh mat around the pipe. Multiple layers of Enviromesh can be installed to accommodate higher maximum operating pressures. There are two primary purposes for the Enviromesh layer: 1) to dissipate the pressure and force (upwards of 5000 psi or more) emanating from a small leak in the pipe – this ensures that the outer containment liner is not compromised, and 2) to capture and contain any product that leaks from the pipe within the annulus. The Enviromesh layer also provides a pristine environment to house a leak detection system of the customer's choice so that they are able to detect a problem instantaneously while safeguarding the system from degradation due to corrosive ground water, soils, etc.

End caps/Bulkheads: The end caps and bulkheads prevent any product that is leaked into the containment system from migrating past the bulkhead into the adjacent containment sections, thereby limiting the flow of the leaked product to a smaller space/volume, or for the end caps, to prevent leaked products from escaping the containment system and adversely impacting the environment.

*Technical Data Sheets Are Available Upon Request

  • Envirolock can be installed on new pipelines or existing pipelines in most weather conditions, even in temperatures down as low as -40 degrees.
  • The system can be manufactured in a controlled environment and then shipped to site or manufactured in situ.
  • Flow stoppages are not required for installation on existing pipelines, so customers will not experience any service disruptions while Envirolock's protections are being added to the pipeline.
  • The system is maintenance-free and extremely durable, and is expected to double the useful life of the pipeline it protects.
  • It is 100% compatible with standard industry techniques for pipeline monitoring and maintenance, including cathodic protection. Operators can elect to include their own preferred leak detection system.
  • If a pipeline leak is captured by the system, the pipeline can continue operating until an intervention can be planned and executed.
  • Envirolock materials are not hazardous and can be disposed of using standard protocols.
